Artistic Director Opening for Fall 2018


The Northern Delaware Oratorio Society (NDOS) is currently searching for a new Artistic Director for the 2018/2019 season.  The current director, Sheila Bourgeault Dowdy, is retiring at the end of this season.  Questions can be sent to or submitted through our Contact page.


Position Type: Contract, part time

Reports To: NDOS Board of Directors

Time Commitment: Minimum of 2.5 hours up to 7 hours (pre-concert) a week over 10 months

Contract Dates: August 1, 2018 to May 31, 2019

Organization Summary: The Northern Delaware Oratorio Society is a non-auditioned SATB chorus of approximately 50 singers established in 1970 to promote the appreciation and performance of classical choral music, with an emphasis on works performed with organ accompaniment.  NDOS  is a 501(c)3  non-profit with a Board of Directors elected from the membership.  Go to our About page for more information.

Season: NDOS' season runs from September through  May and is divided into two semesters, with one major concert in the Fall and another in the Spring.

Position Summary: The Artistic Director determines the artistic direction of the Society,  including development of season and concert themes and repertoire selection, conducts rehearsals and performances of the Society, and develops the musical skills of the members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct weekly (Sunday afternoon) and occasional extra rehearsals
  • Conduct performances, including instrumentalists
  • Develop season programming and determine concert repertoire
  • Recruit instrumentalists and soloists
  • Coordinate with the Board on recruitment of an accompanist when necessary
  • Assist the Board with venue selection and booking
  • Provide program notes


  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant area such as Choral Conducting, Voice, Music Education, Music Performance or Church Music
  • Ability to sing a cappella and sing any part
  • Basic piano skills
  • Knowledge of all voice types and appropriate vocal technique
  • Choral conducting experience
  • Legal status for employment in the United States (Note - NDOS cannot sponsor visa applicants)

Desired Professional and Personal Characteristics:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in relevant field
  • Ability to maintain integrity and high level of musical standards
  • Ability to train and instruct members with diverse musical backgrounds
  • Ability to challenge and support the chorus musically
  • Ability to direct a large group and maintain motivation, discipline and sense of fun
  • Ability to work effectively with the NDOS Board, Accompanist and volunteers
